Quick Glimpse; 500GB WDC Green vs 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12

Notes:
1. WDC green is averagely hotter than Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (about 2°; prolong usage).
2. WDC green has more sustainable read/write operations compared to Seagate Barracuda 7200.12. Although, seagate has faster access time compared to wd.
3. Acoustic-wise (noise value or lack of it), both are almost the same.
4. The pics below are very much alarming for seagate (see the yellow highlights). I'll leave it unto you, to explain (to me & others) the details:

Using HDTune:

Anyways, these are just for comparisons, no harm/pun intended.

In my experience, seagates easily gets a spin retry count warning ( whatever that means, but i notice a small increaments of systems slowdown once this happens) and thier drives easily dies out. I just avoid seagates now and stick to WD, prefferably the Black editions.

Yep, bro. Kaya I switched to WD. Another thing that's alarming is the "relocated sector count" (as hi-lited on the pics above). Twice na bumitaw sa akin yung seagate 7200.12 na 'yan (as primary & back-up). Twice na rin ako nag-recover ng files, tsk. On those ocassions, I ended up using seatools (ran the advance test), just to re-allocate the busted sectors. Pero doon sa 7th, 9th & 10th generations ng seagate sata's, wala naman akong naging problema. I think the latest generations have problems, nont only in their firmware but also,  mechanically na rin (eversince seagate acquired maxtor, parang naging ganito na ang trend). Although, I could be wrong...

Swordfish, pa-post nga yung Benchamrk graph mo?

I think though its not official yet, but it is already around the internet.

Some Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (even the 500GB Baracuda has - Check your HDD Aim, it might be affected) owners are now experiencing "Relocated (or re-allocated) sector count" and/or "spin try count errors".

You have a problem with your Seagate HDD if it starts to have this "clicking" sound.

Hahahahhahah! That's how seagates perform today. Angry

I usually just take out my seagates out of my case and just use them when i need to store some files . to make things easier, i use a Sata HDD Docking Station when i want to retrieve some files in the seagates. But i don't install them inside the case nor will i install the OS on these.

guys, its official (from 3rd party sources), SOMETHING is wrong with the Seagate Barracudas starting from 7200.11 to 12.

even with the new firmware versions for the 7200.11 (CCxx series) and for the rest of the 7200.12, there seems to be a problem with the spin retry count that may show up in 1-2 years of continuous use

fortunately, i think its not yet grim for the OLD 7200.11 (SDxx) firmware, AS LONG as the firmware SD1A is applied as soon as you get the drive

so for now, until this cloud settles, im shifting to WDC (which i already have started with my new builds/new client orders)

by the way, THERE IS the 1TB 64mb buffer variant for the WDC Green edition. Is it worth the extra 32mb of buffer? the price is quite delicious* at this point

For those confused as to what the GREEN, BLUE, & BLACK Caviar  versions of western digital mean, here's a brief explanation:

1.The “green” line is their low power, earth friendly line where low noise and low heat trumps shear speed (though from all reports they don’t lag that far behind in this category either).

2.The “Blue” line is their middle of the road line where noise and heat output are a concern but it is more in balance with performance (this is WD original line before the switch)

3. The “Black” editions, these drives are all about performance and power, even if that means increased noise, heat output and energy consumption.

To put this a different way, the green line make perfect data drives (i.e. non OS drives) as they are quiet and draw less power. The Blue line are your all round drives and do a very, very well as a data or OS drive. You can consider these the station wagon or “yeoman” class of WD drives, perfect for most occasions. Then you have your hot rodded high performance, leather jacketed bad boys: the Black line. These drives are all about speed and while they can be used as data only drives they excel at being your number one OS drive. These beasts can supposedly come close to or even tie VelociRaptor levels of performance (and beat the older generations of WD360, WD740 AND WD1500 Raptors)….with a butt load of extra space thrown in for good measure. Add in an industry leading 5 year warranty for the Black line and you have the makings of one awesome, “enthusiast grade” HDD.

How about cache vs cache? Which is faster? A Caviar Blue with 8mb cache or a Caviar Green with 16mb cache? Main difference from a blue to a green is the green can spin down to 5400rpm when demand is low, like CnQ or Speedstep in procies.I could be wrong though.
