With a complete AMD/ATI rig, and with the new released drivers, the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition beats Core i7920 rig on several applications and the majority of games.

Quote
Compared to the Q9650 which costs $70 more, the Phenom II 965 won four gaming tests, tieing for the fifth. And what about the similarly priced Core i7 920? Well, let's just say its low frequency did not allow it to beat the new Phenom II either. That's right, the Core i7 920 could not beat the 3.4GHz Phenom II in any of our gaming tests. It could only match it in two games out of five. This result I must admit astonished me. I expected it to lose since in gaming the Phenom II 955 already beat it a couple of times, but I did not imagine the difference would have been that much..........

Overall, since the processor is keeping the same price point as the previous flagship, AMD has just increased the performance per dollar ratio one can get. AMD did a great job putting together the X4 965!

I think you should be more specific so as not to mislead. The "Overclocked" Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition beats i7 920 on several programs.  Cheesy

This only shows us that we have to OC the Phenom II X4 965BE to 3.4GHz for it to perform head to head with a Core i7-920.  Smiley

Phenom II X4 965BE is not overclocked. Right out of the box, this beast has a native speed of 3.4GZ. Overclocking this monster could hit more than 4.GHz easily.

you should read carefully.

Sorry darkangel. I am to be blamed.  Smiley

No more beers for me... before entering a forum. Grin

---------------------

Truly the Core i7-920 didn't perform well in Bioshock and Far Cry 2 as it lagged behind the stock X4 965BE by more than 10 FPS (really noticeable). This shows what 3.4GHz can do against 2.66GHz.

Looking back at the other game results, 1 to 4 FPS difference is nothing especially when we are comparing readings over 30 FPS.

Though I wonder, what if we OC the core i7 920? But that's another topic.  Cheesy

Synthetic BMs, compression, media conversion, we all know who's still on top.

e kung naka oc din ang i7 920? ma beat kaya ng phenom II x4 965BE?

Well, it did beat the X4 965 in more BMs while still on stock, then how much more when OC'ed. But again, this is for another topic.  Roll Eyes

That's alright Tesseract. (4 dimensional hypercube. Wink interesting name) Welcome to our forum. your ideas are appreciated.  Smiley

as consumers, we are just discussing what are the competing CPU products on the entry high end range. AMD has thrown their piece in the market and it seriously challenges Intel has to offer in terms of performance/dollar ratio specially considering the overall system build cost.

If gaming is the only consideration AMDs setup is much more cheaper and has more value for money than the other.

However, tables turn when we put our priorities on video editing, content creation, compression, and video conversion. apparently the Intel's offering show much muscle and output on these jobs, including overclocking.

agreed considering the price of the X58 mobo's vs the 790GX,...it could even run in a 780G chipset right? then if you're on a budget, it's a no brainer Smiley

frankly my next 'concept' rig is an AMD/ATI platform (hopefully im faithful to the dragon platform)

if you have multiple PCs then cost on capital outlay (total purchase price of individual multiple components to build multiple rigs) is in favor of AMD. They got that right

then there's the issue of price/performance ratios and performance per watt - still true if you have multiple PCs which brings about savings, especially for power draw on the wall outlet - AMD is still it

then there's the thing called an entertainment PC (HD movie watching, digital audio playback) AMD still got that covered through their renowned ATI Radeon video cards (which by the way is the only video card with built in HD Audio codec aside from the one on the motherboard / separate audio card) for NVidia, you still need a cable to interface the motherboard's digital audio stream to the video card's DVI/HDMI output

true, the i7 / GTX 285 or GTX 295 combo is still king of the hill as far as raw performance on games are concerned, but my recent experience is, my electricity consumption is far less on an AMD/ATI platform than on my i7/NVidia setup, both downclocked and undervolted if just going through facebook/surfing/playing online games

by the way .. the HD audio codecs found on even the cheapest ATI radeon cards is still better than the one found on the motherboard, even approaching that of creative's xfi series

intel is building processors and motherboards, AMD is building complete platforms and in this day and age of convergence of the digital home, AMD has that covered.

think about it.
