1 for agree..

no...

i was for death penalty in the past because of the presence of high crimes in our society today...

this is because there is no "undo" button when we sentence someone to death... and sooner or later new evidence would uncover the innocence of the "convict"...

it is better for someone to be convicted and sentenced for life behind bars...

life is not ours to give, nor ours to take...

Agree with malakaayo. And besides we have lots of alternative punishments.And wala tayong license para pumatay ng tao. Si God lang ang may karapatan. Some cases na hindi guilty ang suspect pero patay na dahil huli na ang lahat.

I agree!!

however, this should only be done on rare and extreme circumstances where certain individuals are ultra dangerous to themselves, to others, and to the whole human community. Very rare people exhibit themselves as a cancer or virus on our community and these are the ones that needed termination.  Grin  Grin  Grin

claiming that its only God that could take it away because he was the only one that gives life, is actually a presumption that God gave life. If we follow such logic, then we could blame God for all the atrocities made by all twisted psycho path criminals. After all he gave them life. thus basing such reasoning alone, and concluding that death penalty is wrong, is absurd and illogical.

moreover, if we look down on the old testament we will see that God is the first one through out human history, if we are to  believe it to be a historical event, who initiated a death penalty. Genesis 2:17 says: "for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die". By this we could see that God himself agrees on Death penalty but only on those deserving it.

Yes, but for our society No!

Our justice system sucks big time so when ever there are people who was given a sentence of death, i can't really be sure if that this person deserves this kind of punishment maybe beacause:

He was used as a escaped goat
Frame-up
He's so F_____g POOR (i wish to see a big shot getting killed live or some sort)
Etc.

ALSO

The cost of killing is much cheaper than letting these criminals lived on a cell.

@bro darkangel  I agree!! Cool  Cheesy

Good to hear something from an "inclined agnostic"! Never met one before.  Tongue We should have a drink sometime bro and talk more about it.

Well, our current judicial system is normally based on the things we classify as "good" or "evil". So accurate with regards to individual human tastes and predispositions. "Tastes and Predispositions" ?? In a nutshell that is for the human species to THRIVE. Well evolutionary ethics says we are redesigning our culture to be more "user friendly" to the human members. Is death penalty becoming "user friendly"?  Grin  Grin  Grin

No for me. Everybody is entitled for a second chance. Kahit gaano pa kasama ang taong yan. si God ang nagbigay sa atin ng buhay, sya lang me karapatang magbawi nu.

@darkangel
God gave us also "free will". So you can't blame Him for all the sadness, cruelty and chaos that is happening around the world.

And about the verse in the bible you mentioned. I think you were referring to Adam and Eve, they broke God's rules and ate the forbidden fruit, that is why God gave death to them/people. If you follow the story, they were condemn to work so they could eat. If they don't they will surely die. I don't think it's death penalty.

Opinion lang po, for a healthy discussion.

Kung gusto nyo matindi parusa, itali na lang at kilitiin ng 2 oras.  Cool

@draw_paintatoms,

Thanks for sharing the general idea of evolutionary ethics. Hope you could give links to those ideas - i'd love to read them. Wink Love the term "user friendly". However its also good to ask: user friendly  to whom? to the general society? or to just a few upper/ruling class? Smiley.

@maelstorm,

Its good that you have voiced your opinion. However, following your logic about god giving men freewill, then he has some responsibility of the misuse of freewill he gave. Did he not anticipated that freewill will cause and grant people to be criminals causing much chaos, death and suffering throughout mankind's history? a knife is a useful tool, but will you give it to children who has a potential to use it in a detrimental way?

Yes its about (the legend?) of adam and eve eating a forbidden fruit. the sentence god gave about this action was a death penalty according to Genesis 2:17 although its more like a life sentence (in this case a true life sentence, and death as an ultimate outcome). but this could hardly be an action of a god believed to be of love and grace. would you put to death or life sentence a child because he has eaten a forbidden food in the fridge? According to theology we are just like children to god and yet our supposedly ancient ancestor Adam did not met such treatment.

Just a little food for thought. Smiley

@darkangel
Yep, God knows eveything. Before you even think of doing it. "Freewill" might/will cause such chaos, suffering etc. but it is the responsibility of a human being and not by Him. If your boss gave you your salary, will your boss still be responsible of the things you want to buy with it?

Imagine the world would be if God didn't put any rules or I may say commandments for us.
