Here's a bare-bone Linux distro.  It uses KDE with only a few apps installed, therefore, no bloat, that you can build upon.  Yet it has the popular PCLOS Control Center to configure your system.  ISO is under 300MB.

Here's the download link:

http://spout.ussg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-minime-2008.iso

And the release announcement:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=58&topic=38535.0

Running on my laptop dual booting with Vista.  Really good-looking Linux.

At the other end of the scale, there's Ubuntu Ultimate Edition.  It's loaded with apps and the artwork rocks!   It's available on a Live DVD (1.7GB).  The current version is 1.7 which is based on Ubuntu Gutsy.  Read more here: http://ultimateedition.info/.

Will keep you posted how this goes.  I've been reading rave reviews of this Ubuntu variant.

We have light distros on CD, and we have ones which we can load to a flash drive. I got Damn Small Linux on my 2Gb Flash drive -- bootable and still usable for storage since the whole OS occupies about 50Mb.

Another distro that you can install to a USB drive or run from Live CD is Linux Puppy.  As it loads the entire OS into the RAM, data fetching to the USB drive or Live Cd is minimized.  The Live Cd can even be ejected, freeing your drive for other purposes.  Puppy is lightning fast and can bring old PC's back to life.  It is available in several variants such as Grafpup (for artists), Prism (Puppy with tons of apps included), Barebone (barebone puppy).

Woohooo...installed Ubuntu Ultimate Edition into my lappie.  It has Ubuntu's characteristics but comes with tons of applications and Ubuntu's artwork has been completely reworked.
