The mainstream models will replace the current LGA1156 'H1' Clarkdale and Lynnfield CPUs (Core i3 and Core i5) and will use LGA1155 'H2' packaging.

Yes, that's right, LGA1155 - one fewer pins than current LGA1156 CPUs. These sockets are NOT compatible, so you cannot use an existing LGA1156 CPU in a new motherboard or visa versa. Not only is the position of pin-1 different, the socket notch has moved from 9mm to 11.5mm from the centre and the entire voltage plane layout has changed.

Mainstream Sandy Bridge CPUs will be both native dual- and quad-core products, currently targeting TDPs of 65W and 95W respectively, both with Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost technology. At the moment it's not clear what frequency these CPUs will be though (likely because none are available yet from Intel).

All LGA1155 CPUs will have integrated graphics built into the core instead of a separate chip. This is an upgrade from the current IGP, PCI...

We’ve been curious about the Google TV initiative  since hearing about the search giant’s foray into set-top box land, and although scant few details have emerged since then we can now look forward to a full reveal at next month’s I/O Developer Conference.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google will unveil the Android-based television platform at its annual developer event in San Francisco on May 19 and 20.

Hardware partners, including Sony, Intel and Logitech, have already announced plans to release products on the Google TV platform. Consumer electronics giant Samsung also recently confirmed that it’s considering the platform as well — an interesting move considering Samsung already has its own app store for Internet-connected TVs.

Google has extended significant tendrils into the television space lately, both with the Google TV project and with a television search initiative with Dish Network. In some ways it’s a logical “third screen”...

Every new AMD release we held our breath and hoped for something stunning that would not only put AMD firmly back on the map as a major player in the CPU market, but also force Intel to reduce their mad prices down to a more sensible level so everyone wins. No more do we have to let out a slight sigh of disappointment at a processor that is great for the money but just not quite at the cutting edge.

Being a six core processor we'd expect it to perform well in tests that are heavily CPU reliant, such as the POV-Ray and CineBench tests. The real surprise we found was how well it performed even in gaming. Anyone who has an opinion to voice, and with hardware that's everybody, has long held the belief that games don't take advantage of extra cores enough to justify spending...

As promised,

Here's my review of the following:

Intel Core i7-920 Quad Core with HyperThreading with Turbo Boost Processor

Intel DX58SO Enthusiast Level Board with Intel Bios Ver. 5200 (April 2010 release)

Corsair H50 Hybrid Cooler (Closed Loop Water cooling with copper block and radiator)

Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600

You can read on my previous post for comparison on the temps with the Deep Cool Killer Whale Premium

Putting it all together for that overclock rush

Conditions:
Thermal Interface Material - Shin-Etsu G517 (stock TIM of Corsair H50)

Fan configuration - corsair H50 stock fan with reversed configuration (Corsair claims fan should be blowing into the chassis so the radiator can get air from the rear exhaust (violating the intel TAC guidelines), but i reversed it (following intel ATX rear fan guidelines))

Done Nights - ambient temperature 29-32C

Microsoft’s big gamble going with free Office 2010.

With Office 2010, one of the biggest changes is how many ways there are to get Microsoft's most profitable software program for free.

In addition to the free, browser-based Office Web Apps, Microsoft is also offering PC makers the ability to install a basic version of Office on new computers. The new program, Office Starter, includes a stripped-down version of Word and Excel. PC makers, retailers and Microsoft can all make money if the PC buyer later upgrades to a paid version of Office.

"People will be exposed to the Office 2010 experience from the minute they turn on that PC,"

Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop said Wednesday in an interview here. Microsoft is estimating that 80 percent of new PCs sold at retail after the launch of Office 2010 will have the...
